The Scottish Government will “consider” outlawing disposable vapes after the Daily Record’s campaign calling for a crackdown was raised in parliament.

SNP Health Secretary Humza Yousaf said the Holyrood government was consulting experts on next steps including examining a potential ban.

He was responding to campaigning Green MSP Gillian Mackay – who supports prohibiting the single-use plastic gadgets – after she quizzed him on both public health and environmental concerns around the products.

It comes after the Record yesterday launched a new campaign to ban the disposable devices amid fears they’ve turned our streets into a plastic dumping ground.

We told how a staggering 1.3 million single-use vapes are thrown away every week in the UK – a staggering rate of two per second – polluting public spaces, threatening wildlife and wasting precious lithium batteries.

A ban on disposable vapes will be a big step backwards for ex-smokers across the country. A far more sensible approach would be to have “Vape bins” installed similar to how they had ashtrays on top of normal bins.

1000’s have quit smoking with the use of disposable vapes and I fear many would return to smoking. Personally I have tried 2-3 vaping devices and haven’t been able to get on with any of them.

To put it into perspective a single electric car battery requires 8 kilograms of lithium, the equivalent to 53,000 disposable vapes.

While I understand the waste and environmental issue more emphasis needs to be put into recycling the devices which is not impossible!

Personally Scottish MSP’s would be better off addressing having the worst drug problems in Europe and why that is.

Disposable vapes give smokers the chance to try vaping and at the moment are considered one of the best smoking cessation tools by NHS smoke-free.

I’ve shown in previous blogs the ability to recycle is possible and this would put a lot of smokers off trying vaping and not only that would create an underground market.
